Hands on with the Helio Heat

Cenix GMP-M6 Gaming System
The Cenix GMP-M6 looks like a cross between a PSP, and a 90’s portable TV mockup. It’s actually a cross between a radio, MP3 player, and a handheld, such as the PSP.
At first glance the unit is tiny, like mobile phone tiny. Great for MP3 usage, but as far as gaming is concerned, a little bit bigger would be better. The GMP-M6 measures 90 x 13 x 45.5 mm, the weight is 55grams, so It’s small.
A game console is only as good as the games available. And in the gaming world, quantity is no substitute for quality. That said, while the roster of titles available at launch time is not known, there is a reported 50,000 2D / 3D games available for download. Surely there is something in there worth playing. The GMP-M6 comes with 2 games preloaded.
It seems like it does a little bit of everything, but nothing very well.
ZoneAlarm introduces own wireless router
ZoneAlarm, typically known for it’s security based applications, has announced it’s own router, aptly titled, Wireless Z100G. It will be a WPA2 (802.11) based router sporting IPSec encryption, and Super-G speeds. It will include a built-in firewall (most routers do), and antivirus protection.
Incorporating ZoneAlarm’s stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall technology, a firewall that filters packets of information all the way down to the most deeply embedded data, Check Point said the router will offer an intrusion detection and prevention system that actively monitors network traffic to stop hackers and worms.
As with the ZoneAlarm software, users will be able to control things like peer-to-peer and instant-message communications and will receive regular automatic software and antivirus updates when they purchase the router.
The article sounds like a badly written press release. I would definitely do a little more research before purchasing it. I’m still using an old Linksys 802.11b router, and it’s happily chugging along.
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Processor
Intel has created the monster of CPU’s for the desktop. It is the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Quad-Core CPU. That’s right, it’s the first true quad core cpu!
The CPU is basically two Core 2 Duo CPU’s merged as one.
The Core 2 Extreme QX6700 runs at 2.66GHz on a 1066MHz front-side bus, so its clock speed matches that of the second fastest Core 2 Duo, the E6700. (The Core 2 Extreme X6800 is the fastest at 2.93GHz.) Intel probably chose not to push any harder on clock speed in order to keep the QX6700 inside of a reasonable power envelope. The E6700’s thermal rating, or TDP, is 65W, while the X6800’s is 75W. Fittingly, the QX6700’s TDP is exactly twice that of the E6700 at 130W. That’s quite enough heat production for a desktop processor, and Intel has already established a 130W thermal envelope for Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs that use this same LGA775 infrastructure.
This is the first CPU (I even held out from getting a Core 2 Duo so far…) that I really want since AMD introduced the Athlon XP’s.
Sony to sell an 898 gram laptop
Sony has made their Vaio line of laptops even lighter. Their newest “type G” Vaio is now a mere 898 grams, and includes a 12.1-inch LCD screen.
Sony said it expects a basic model of its new “type G” computer, which runs for about 12.5 hours on a battery and is not equipped with an optical drive, to sell for about 220,000 yen ($1,881).
It has no plan at the moment to offer the “type G” models overseas.
The company did not disclose its sales target for the new models, but said it aims to raise the ratio of its personal computer revenue from corporate clients to 30 percent of its PC revenue in Japan by the business year ending March 2010, from the current level of less than 10 percent.
With the exploding battery, rootkit, and DRM fiasco’s related to Sony; it’s safe to say I won’t be getting one of these laptops.
