The RCA EZ201 looks like a little ipod with an eye to me. I wonder if it works well for the low $100’s price tag?

As expected, this 5.25-ounce video recorder sports a ho hum enclosure, no optical zoom, 512MB of internal memory, a 1.5-inch LCD, MemoryManager software, and a SD expansion slot as well. The device is also compatible with Box.net’s online storage / sharing service, touts an EZ Grab feature that allows users to easily snag still shots from live action footage, and can function for two solid hours on a pair of AA cells. Best of all, however, is the price that CC is currently charging for this budget-minded device, as the $119.99 asking price is a full $10 less than we had previously seen, and you’ll even get a 1GB SD card thrown in gratis.

Wouldn’t a cell phone be more effective than this? Not only that, you would also have to carry around this extra device on top of everything else.Â

The Arhos 604 includes a brushed metal casing that is much less scratch resistant than other handheld devices (iPod…).

Video playback is where the 604 shines. According to the specs, it’s compatible with MPEG-4 ASP up to 720×480 at 30fps, AVI file container with MP4 file format, WMV9, and protected WMV. Unlike the Cowon, it’s not DivX certified, and it doesn’t play MPEG-2. However, many of our DivX files played without a hitch. You can also download plug-ins that will let you play H.264 and MPEG-2 files–they will be available soon at about $10 each (there’s mention of AAC and AC3 support too). Though it doesn’t cover the same ground as the Cowon, the 604 can handle your files, which in part will be transcoded via Windows Media Player, the de facto jukebox for the Archos. Though we’ll comment on video performance later, the 604’s screen is amazing, and video controls are superresponsive.
