I’m not usually a big fan of local city sites other than craigslist.  I rarely even use craigslist.  Maybe I’ll find yelp a littl more useful?  I doubt it.

Local city sites are increasingly popular, but sometimes you have to wonder how much of it is paid advertising, you know? Not with Yelp. It’s all user generated reviews by locals passionate about their discoveries, from restaurants to their favorite park.

User reviews are good and all (Newegg.com is a perfect example of this), but they can still be tough to trust sometimes…

Today I ran across a headline on the Apple rumor site, Think Secret. Placed on the main page were the words, “Reborn Mac mini set to take over the living room.” According to Think Secret’s sources, Apple will be releasing an Intel based Mac mini that is already being dubbed as the “TiVo Killer.”

Could Apple have the answer to my media center problems?

On the evening of June 10th I decided to do a reformat, and full re-install of my operating system, Windows XP, on my computer at home. I was previously only using Windows XP, and decided later on in the process to try out Linux. After reading several reviews on the web about the various distributions, I decided to go with Fedora Core 4 Linux distribution (stability wasn’t really an issue for me).

If I could take my entire high school career and examine how I spent my free time, I don’t think I would be too surprised at the results. I would say, in a given month, I saw at least four movies at the local movie theater on average. Now that those days are ancient history, my movie going days seem to be history as well. I haven’t seen a movie in probably a year or two…until last night.

The final reward picture given off ourcolony.net…well…wasn’t a picture at all. It was a short video of the xbox360, but it also included split second shots of other Xbox prototypes. Hello Gamer has gotten still images of these “could have been” Xbox 360s, and even created a nice panoramic for our viewing pleasure. Am I the only one who isn’t all that impressed by the look of the new Xbox 360? Well, I will say, that of all the prototypes in that video, the final version is the best. What were the creators of some of those prototypes thinking?!? Some of them look like an MGE computer case…ok, not that bad. I do hope at least a few of those designers have lost their job.

Earlier this week Yahoo released their own and their competitors took a big hit. Stock in Napster dropped 26.8% and RealNetworks took a similar beating with a drop of 21.1%. The only other major competitor, Apple, didn’t seem to be affected (dropping only 2%). Aside from Apple, the majority of the big names in legal online music downloads seem to think that there are plenty of people out there who are interested in a subscription based online music store. At only $4.99 I am extremely interested in the idea of “renting” an unlimitted amount of music, but the only problem is…I love iTunes. I think Apple will open its eyes to people like me who don’t care if they own the music they listen to. My taste in music changes every 30 minutes or so and a subscription based system like this may be exactly what I need. I would love to be able to download any and every song in the iTunes database, and just plug in my iPod and take the music with me. I am not sure how easy, or if it is even possible to get the Yahoo subscription based songs on my iPod, but I will tell you this…I am extremely lazy. Apple currently holds 70% of the legal download market, but I think that unless Apple gets on the subscription based service, that number could drop…and fast.
